Technology
We are committed to establishing a network able to distribute voice, data, and video technology to all Catholic Central students both during the school day, as well as at home and beyond.
We are dedicated to providing training and support in the use of these technologies to improve instruction, enrich communication and build information literacy among students, parents, faculty, administration and the community around us.

DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP
CCHS Digital Citizenship Course
In compliance with Michigan legislation, E-Rate, and the Children’s Internet Protection Act, Catholic Central High School addresses the appropriate and ethical use of information technology in the classroom through a student-centered course which includes the following topics: the concept and purpose of both copyright and fair use; distinguishing lawful from unlawful downloading and peer-to-peer file sharing; and avoiding plagiarism and provides for the education of minors about Internet safety, including appropriate online behavior, including interacting with other individuals on social networking sites and in chat rooms, cyberbullying awareness and response, and protect online privacy and avoid an online predator. The 2018-2019 course contained four lessons to help teach about those topics, each centered on the following guiding questions:
- Lesson 1: What is my digital identity and how does it affect my real life?
- Lesson 2: How can I make responsible, safe decisions online?
- Lesson 3: What are my rights and responsibilities when it comes to sharing content online? Why does this matter?
- Lesson 4: What do companies and people online know about me? How can I protect my privacy?
We look forward to expanding our Digital Citizenship course offerings in 2019-2020, which will include new course content and opportunities for students to engage in solving real-world Digital Citizenship issues through community partnerships.
Student Tech Aide Program
Students also have opportunities to gain college and career-ready technology skills while developing into engaged digital citizens through our unique student tech aide program. Students are matched with their area of interest and we work to train students to act as first-level technology support for staff and students. Our tech aides may learn: how to diagnose and repair device and software issues, how to demonstrate applications and technology to peers and staff, and about different careers and pathways available to them in the field of technology. Interested students must submit applications and interview with the technology department. Application information will be made available during the first few weeks of school.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
iPad Insurance
Tech Defenders has been our insurance provider as well as our vendor for repairing iPads for the last few years, and we will continue their service in 2019-2020. I am pleased to announce that a major change for this year is that every student device will be covered through a fleet protection plan. What this means for you is that your child’s school-provided device now carries insurance at no additional cost to you and no additional steps need to be taken to enroll your student’s device. Insurance will cover repairs that are not the result of abuse or misuse to the device, however, insurance does not cover the replacement of lost devices. More details on this new device insurance program can be found on our website.
Canvas Learning Management System
Catholic Central High School provides many digital tools that support the high levels of communication, collaboration, and creativity required in today’s classroom while fostering student development of the skills they’re going to need in the future. A pivotal tool in supporting a rigorous and innovative learning environment is Canvas, our Learning Management System. An LMS is a software program that brings classroom tools together to help deliver engaging instructional content and resources. Canvas, specifically, is the most-widely used LMS in the United States and offers direct access to instructional content, assignments, event calendars, the ability to electronically submit work, and so much more. We will provide more specific instruction on how to use this program in the first weeks of school and details are available on our school website. However, if you have questions, please give me a call or send an email. I would welcome the chance to talk with you about how Canvas supports your student’s learning and how it can help inform parents of classwork, grades, and schedules.
Reminder to Parents That Student Phone Use Is Not Allowed During the School Day
One reason is that we manage access to apps on school-issued devices, and this is not possible with student-owned devices, including phones. This also ensures that our bandwidth is utilized for educational purposes on school-issued devices, making school-issued devices more efficient and accessible to all students.
NEED TECH HELP?
The help desk is available by emailing helpdesk@grcatholiccentral.org. Solutions to most technology issues can be found on the Catholic Central website under Academics-Technology.
